Call for Entries as Prize for New Fiction goes Annual

The trustees of The Desmond Elliott Charitable Trust are delighted to announce today (Tuesday 23rd September) that the Desmond Elliott Prize will now be an annual event.

Nikita Lalwani Gifts £10,000 Desmond Elliott Prize money to Liberty

In a moving speech at the announcement of the inaugural Desmond Elliott Prize last night (Thursday 26th June), winner Nikita Lalwani asked the trustees of the Prize to donate her £10,000 prize money to the human rights organisation, Liberty.

Nikita Lalwani was tonight (Thursday, 26th June) named the winner of the £10,000 Desmond Elliott Prize for Gifted, a story about a maths prodigy growing up in 1980s Cardiff, published by Penguin Books.

William Hill has given odds on the shortlist: Child 44 is the favourite at 1/ 2; Gifted is at 2/1; and Sunday at the Cross Bones is at 3/1. Graham Sharpe of William Hill comments: '1/2 is the shortest price we have ever quoted a book at to win a literary award, so Child 44 is the hot favourite.'

The judges for the inaugural Desmond Elliott Prize are announced today, 25 January 2008. Best-selling author, Penny Vincenzi will chair the panel of judges and is joined by Tatler Editor, Geordie Greig and author and journalist Cristina Odone.
